4 Dos and Don'ts for Boating with Wine

With the unofficial start of summer only 2 weeks away, Memorial Day weekend looks to be filled with BBQs, boating, and of course our favorite: wine. This time around though, don’t be “that guy” that brings the red wine and spills it on himself while boating. Follow these tips to keep your sophisticated wine appeal on the boat:

1. Don’t bring red wine
While seemingly obvious, don’t bring red wine boating. Red wine is generally more tannic and therefore will cause a drying sensation as you drink the wine. You’re out on a boat in the sun—a drink that isn’t refreshing just isn’t going to cut it. And what if you hit a wave? You’re not going to pick up that hot girl in the white skirt if you spill your red wine on her.

2. Avoid heavy whites
So if you’re not bringing red wine, what about white? Yes, white wine is the way to go, but do be careful. You’ll want to avoid your heavy whites like Chardonnay and Viognier, they aren’t going to be refreshing enough. Stick to your lighter grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio. Some of our favorite boating grapes & wines include Vinho Verde, Albariño, and Verdejo.

3. Go with the screw top
While screw top wines aren’t nearly as classy as their cork counterparts, when you’re out on a boat, you might not just have your trusty corkscrew with you and then what? With a twist off, you’re good to go. Easy off, easy on.

4. Avoid the glass
Generally, when you’re boating glass isn’t allowed, so what do you do to fill your wine craving? Hit the box wine. But avoid the cheap stuff, it’ll just make you look like that guy that never graduated from college. Our pick: 3 Thieves, it tastes great, comes in little juice boxes, and did we mention it’s a great deal?

Loved the article on boating and wine. Although it has always been an unwritten rule that there should be no glass on boats, many wine drinkers are getting tired of ruining the taste of expensive wine by drinking it out of plastic. I have found a new product that let’s me still enjoy my wine out of at least plastic stemware if not glass stemware. It is called a Yoebi wine glass holder and it fits into the cupholder of a boat and it works great. I found it on a website called www.seasucker.com. I have a sailboat which doesn’t have many cup holders but this website also has a product that I bought that suction cups to my table and has 4 cup holders on it. And a boxed wine…are you sure?

Wow that’s fantastic, didn’t know those existed.

And yes, boxed wine, the right kinds that is, can be exceptional. It is actually the most efficient way to store wine as absolutely no air mixes with wine till serving. Check out the Three Thieves, delicious!
